Anxious People Fredrik Backman Oct 8, 2026 Sweden - A botched bank robbery, a hostage drama, a bridge, a love story, "stockholmers" and idiots. An apartment open house, the realtor, Zara (rich ex-banker), Anna-Lena & Roger (retired and looking for DIY fixer uppers), Ro & pregnant wife Julia, limes, Estelle (87), a locked bathroom (Lennart in his underwear & stuck in a rabbit head), a large closet with a draft, pizza, fireworks, an empty apartment across the hall. Older police officer Jim, his son Jack, younger police officer. A dropped drawing of a monkey, a frog and an elk. Nadia psychologist treats Zara who has carried a paticular letter in her purse for 10 years. Hostages freed, apt door locked, blood on the carpet, missing bank robber. Man on the bridge to teenage boy - Because that was a parent's job: to provide shoulders. Shoulders for your children to sit on when they're little so they can see the world, then stand on when they get older so they can reach the clouds, and sometimes lean against whenever they stumble and feel unsure. They trust us, which is a crushing responsiblity, because they haven't yet realized that we don't actuall know what we're doing. So the man did what we all do he pretended he knew. The problem is that everything is relative, happiness is based on expectations,ad we have the Internet now. A whole world constantly asking us: "But is your life as perfect as this/ Well? How about now? Is it as perfect as this? If it isn't, change it!" The truth of course is that if people really were as happy as they look on the internet, they wouldn't spend so much damn time on the Internet, because no one who is having a really good day spends half of it taking pictures of themselves. Anyone can nurture a myth about their life if they have enough manure, so if the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, that's probably because it is full of shit. Psychologist to Zara - You seem to get caught up in a lot of disagreements. One technique I'd recommend is to ask yourself three questions before you flare up. One: are the actions of the peersonin questiion intended to harm you personally? Two: Do you possess all of the information about the situation? Three: Do you have anythng to gain from a conflict? Parenthood can lead to sequence of years when the childrens feelings suck all of the oxygen out of a family, and that can be so emotionally intense that some adults go for years without having an opportunity to tell anyone about their own feelings, and if you don't get a chance for long enough, sometimes you simply forget how to do it. Jack's mother (a priest who goes abroad to dangerous places) - "Boats that stay in the harbor are safe, sweetheaart, but that's not what boats were built for." But if there's one thing modern life and the Internet have taught us, it's that you should never expect to win a discussion simply because you are right. They say that a person's personality is the sum of their experiences. But that isn't true, at least not entirely, because if our past was all that defined us, we'd never be able to put up with ourselves. We need to be allowed to convince ourselves that we're more than the mistakes we made yesterday. That we are all of our next choices, too, all of our tomorrows. The truth. There isn't any. All we managed to find out about the boundries of the universe is that it hasn't got any, and all we know about God is that we don't know anything. So the only thing a Mom who was a Priest demanded of her familywas simple: that we do our best. We plant an apple tree today, ewven if we know the world is going to be destroyed tomorrow. We save those we can.

Buckeye Patrick Ryan Aug 12, 2026 Bonhomie, Ohio. Historiacl fiction spans multiple decades from WWII through late 20th century. Cal Jenkins- one leg shorter than the other feels isolated because he cannot serve in the war. Wife Becky Jenkins is a "seer" who shares her talent for free. Felix Salt - successful busnissman who later joins the Navy. Comes back totally changed because of his liason with fellow sailor Augie. Wife Margaret Salt - tries to bury her past and can't face her life as a mother with hidden secrets. Becky in the cemetery at Mrs. Dodson's grave stone - She never attempted to communicate with Mrs. Dodson or any other spirit while she was at the cemetery. Mrs. Dodson, in a dream, had told her not to bother. Spirits didn't linger in graveyards, she'd said. Why would they? There was nothing to do, nothing to observe. And it was true: Becky never felt the presence of any spirits when she was here. The place was like an abandoned motel. She understood why people talked to the graves of their loved ones, of course it was the same reason they came to her parlor but she lamented all those one-sided cemetery conversations. Secrets, regrets, and apologies. These made up the stuff of his life. But there was nothing to be done with them, apparently, and no filing them away. Margaret had been overwhelmed by all the secrets and had spilled the beans only to have those beans sprout and grow more secrets. Skip wasn't to know what had happened between them. Becky's parents and Cal's father weren't to know. Tom wasn't to know the truth of his lineage, for now - or perhaps ever. And if Becky had made any ultimate decision about Cal in her heart, that was another secret. He couldn't undo what he'd done, and without being able to do that, he had no idea how he would ever convince her to take him back. He'd apologized to her a hundred times, until she'd told him to stop, said she'd heard him, and reminded him that those two words, I'm sorry, were very easy to say and literally changed nothing. Was he mistaking her for someone else? Did she look like some-one who'd been through an ordeal? "Fine," she said. "How are you?" "Well, I'll tell you." He laid one of his swollen hands on the newel post. "A person can get whiplash just walking through life. They love your allegro but loathe your troppo. They invite you to lunch, then shit in your soup. Know what I mean? What is it about time that confounds us? We spend it. We save it. We while it away. we waste it. 'We kill it. We complain about not having enough of it, or about having too much of it on our hands. We regret what we've done with it. We give it away. 'We want it back. We say "time and again" when something is bothering us and "it's time " when something is supposed to end. Felix saw it so clearly: all we should ever want of time is more of it. Life was so simple when it was reduced to the barest of necessities: more time, more air. The wisdom that comes with age was needling, he found, because it brought the clarity of hindsight without the means to change anything. He'd spent so much of his early adulthood thinking he'd been truncated in life, because of his leg. Because he hadn't been able to say he'd served in a war, that great marker of identity. But war had marked his father in a manner that had left him forever damaged, and it had wiped Skip's mark away completely. They were the truncated ones - them and countless others who'd gone before and were doubtless to follow, since the world that purported to want peace seemed always to be at war. All Cal had had to do was pick up the pieces of his own mistakes. In fact, that, as he saw it now, was his life's work: trying to make right what he'd gotten wrong. Maybe that was what Sean Robison had been talking about in the fourth grade; maybe Cal's special thing was his determination, after taking a wrecking ball to his life, to put it back together. Wasn't it a fair measure of a person, what they did with their mistakes? How they managed to stumble into some of the right steps, after taking all the wrong ones? This is why old people seem distant and distracted, he thought. We aren't living in the past; the past is living in us. And it's talking. We get old to be able to recalibrate everything we thought was going to be important. We get old just to hear it. It says, the days, the days, the days. Becky couldn't get over how utterly unprepared she was for grief. Given how many people she'd helped over the years with

Closed Casket - Agatha Christie Sophie Hannah Oct 21, 2026 A Hercule Poirot mystery written in the style of Agatha Christie. October 1929, Clonakilty, county Cork, Irish Free State - Widow Lady Athelinda Playford (writer of popular children mystery books featuring Shrimp Seddon) invites famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and Edward Catchpool, a detective at London's Scotland Yard, to her estate Lillieoak. They can not imagine why, unless Lady Playford anticipates a murder. She is about to change her will to exclude son Viscount Harry Playford (his wife Dorro), daughter Claudia (engaged to Dr. Randall Kimpton) and leave everything to her charming secretary Joseph Scotcher (an invalid who has been dying for years of Bright's disease of the kidneys). Sure enough, just a few hours later, Scotcher is beaten to death almost beyound recognition. Other characters: Hatton (butler), Michael Gathercole (tall lawyer), Sophie Bourlet (Joseph's nurse), Brigid Cook), Orville Rolfe (fat lawyer partners with Gathercole), Phyllis (maid), Inspector Arhtur Conree & Sargeant Daniel O'Dwyer. In every Shrimp book, she makes the "milk bottle top" joke. This refers to a shiny, silver milk bottle cap that looks bright and valuable, authenic exterior, but is ultimatelyis fragile, common and worth very little, or that undernath lies a more complex, deceptive reality. Appearance versus reality. Challenges how characters view honesty. Edward Catchpool observes - A phenomenon I have had cause to notice time and again in both my Professional and my social life is that when one meets a large group of people all at once, one somehow knows - as if by otherworldly instinct - which of them one will enjoy speaking to and which are worth avoiding. Joseph Scotcher to maid Phyllis about Brigid - "It's the weakest as have to shout the loudest, make everyone suffer." Lady Playford referring to Dorro's hurtful words - "One ought not to use words carelessly, or even spontaneously. Once they are launched, they cannot be called back." Lady layford to Catchpool about Sophie - ....the vast majority of people are disinclined to confront anything that is messy or peculier. Most people are scared of most things - never forget thet! It is really only writers and artists who can cope with the with the puzzling ambiguities - and those with a investigative inclination." Kimpton - "Why do we allow words to have such power over us? They are lost in air the moment they leave our mouths, Yet they stay with us forever if they are arranged in a memorable order. How can three words - "stone cold dead"- be so more more upsetting tahn the wordless memory of a dead child?" Lady Playford to Catchpool - "... the honest and the dishonest are equally keen on large amounts of money and land, I have found." "You see, in the normal run of things, people who lie as easily as they breathe never admit to it. They have an endless capacity to invent new lies to explain the old ones.It is not a moral problem, in my opinion, so much as a mental illness." Catchpool to Poirot - "when you know two things are true, and those two things seem to go against each other, instead of telling yourself one must not be true, shouldn't you ask yourself what third thing that you have not yet thought of would allow both true things to be true at the same time?"

Mad Mabel Sally Hepworth Sep 30, 2026 Elsie Mabel Waller (later Fitzpatrick) born in 1944,in Australia, grows up ss a lonely child, feeling unloved by her Mother Mary) (with occasional signs of love) and an overbearing father (Elliott) who accuses her of killing her younger sister, Kitty, by giving her polio. Mabel survived, her sister did nott. Elliot & Mary travel a lot without Mabel. She is known as "Mad Mabel", a nickname pushed by her father. She is bullied by other kids. Her father speaks such much of Rosehill (mansion type home originally owned by mothers parents) he seems to love it more than anything else. DId Elliott only marry Marry for Rosehill? Mabel creates an imaginary friend, Daphne. Although we do not know she is only imaginary. They do everything together and are the closest of friends, bosom buddies. After her mother's death, Mary's sister Cecile (and her girlfriend Ness ( becomes her guardian as Elliott is away most of the time and with a new girlfriend, Susan McGinty. Mabel is now 81, 6 feet tall, and lived on Kenny Lane, outside of Melbourne. A small street with interesting neighbors. She is snarky and does not seem friendly. one neighbor, Roxanne has a daughter Persephone, aged 7. Many events take place on Kenny Lane. Eventually, Mabel gets to tell her story to 2 reporters who now cast her in a different light as "Magnificent Mabel." ....but because people have so little regard for female friendsship that they can't fathom a closeness such as we havewithout the romantic element. More fool them. There is no greater love story than that of platonic female love. Friends are like oxygen. If you've been blessed enough to always be surrounded by friends,, you might think I am overplaying this. I don't blame you. if you'd always been surrounded by air, you wouldn't think to credit it for your very existence either. But I have spent much of my life gasping for breath, so I promise you, it's true. Friends are like oxygen. And the only reason I am still alive is Daphne. An only child of unintereested parents, I was left to my own devices for most of my formative years - encouraged to run off and play or simply make myself scarce. Once children were old enough to walk, they were expected to walk out the door and start creating mischieff somewhere else...... But for me, with no friends, it meant childhood was desparately, bone-achingly lonely. My motheralways said that my father could silence a room just by entering it. There was no question it was true. But my mother said it as though it were a magical power, which wasn't true. Anyone could silence a room by using fear and intimidation. It was a weak trick of the unskilled, or for those who lacked charm. But I didn't figure that out until years later. Punctuality, it seems, has joined common sense and properly made furniture on the growing list of things that no longer exist.

Larissa (5) and older sister Lida (8) see a lineup of chidren outside what used to be a synagogue in their town in Ukraine. The women are wearing brown suits with white collars & cuffs. They ask the children questions about themselves, where they live, and are rewarded with 2 pieces of candy each. Larissa has beautiful blond hair and blue eyes. That night, she and Lida are stolen from their Baba. This is the story of the "Lebensborn" (Fount of Life) program designed by the Nazi's. German women were not having babies quickly enough, so between 1940 and 1942, the SS created this program to increase the number of Aryan children.. Blond, blue eyed Polish and Ukrainian young children who looked Aryan were stolen from their parents, examined and measured, marked with a small dot tattoo on the back of thei neck and inside risk. They were then adopted by German families and indoctrinated to hate Jews and Slavs and idiolize Hitler as their Savior. After the war, most of the stolen children refused to leave their German parents, even if their birth parents were still alive and located. It is estimated (Nazis destroyed the records) that about 250,000 Polish and Ukrainian children were stolen.

Eddie & Mike (2 concentration camp survivors) realization after taking with WWII tankmen Pepsi & Fred - It didn't take long for Eddie and Mike to realize that America seemed to be everything Germany was not. Where Aryan purity had become the cornerstone of German Society, America was a marvel of endless possibilities - filled with many cultures that had amalgamated into something wonderous, an enchanted mix of people of varied backgrounds who united to work together. The United States seemed like a magical place, and their fascination lit a flame in the two boys that would never go out.

Not all of it. Just the rather large part he took from me when he came into this world. However well used, I am a loan, not a possession. You give me back upon departure. I will gather up Frankie's talent to spread on newborn souls. And I will do the same with yours one day. As Lowen reads it, she is horrified by what she reads - about their children's deaths and Verity's feelings of resentment towards the children. By Verity's admissisions in the manuscript, is reveals herself as dangerously manipulative narcissist obsessed with Jeremy. Lowen often feels uncomfortable in the house, feels like Verity is watching her and becomes suspicious if Verity is really as catatonic as she seemss to be. I learned very early on that a human is not merely comprised of only one thing. We are two parts that make up the whole. We have our conscience, which includes our mind, our soul, and all the intangible parts. And we have our physical being, which is the machine that our conscience relies on for survival. If you fuck with the machine, you will die. If you neglect the machine, you will die. If you assume your conscience can outlive the machine, You will die shortly after learning you were wrong. It's very simple, really. Take care of your physical being. Feed it what it needs, not what the conscience tells you it wants. Giving in to cravings of the mind that untimately hurt the body is like a weak parent giving in to her child. Caring for your body is no different from caring for a child. Sometimes it's hard, sometimes it sucks, sometimes you just want to give in, but if you do, you'll pay for the consequences eighteen years down the road.
